Life is a miracle - letter to my Serbian friends
Yesterday I watched the second Serbian movie within a short time
(Krugovi was the first and it also touched me a lot) and this was a
stunning experience once again. I know Emir Kusturica very well (White
cat - black cat for example), but this time he has even overpassed his
earlier qualities. This film is simply genial from its very first moment
to the last one. I cannot express myself differently since there is not
a single scene which I could compose better than he did. All the
characters are so human, so realist, so natural (even the donkey whose
role is primordial), the whole story has a so clear, so powerful
impulse, it starts as a crazy comedy but after that it turns to a same
crazy drama and at this point it becomes so dizzy that the spectator is
lifted out of his artificial model world and put into a completely
different space of completely different dimensions. For me the catarzis
came when the muslim lady was almost dying and the Serbian soldiers came
in with the globe to show her where Australia is. At that moment I
really started crying. Nothing could better tell about our humanity,
about our deepest roots than the spontaneous reaction of these soldiers
there. And the tears went on until the end of the film and even after
that. A nation which can create a film like this is one of the most
precious nations in the world. What I have found in Pirot among you came
back from the screen yesterday, exactly the same thing. I really cannot
find words to talk about my feelings now, I am just shuttering since I
cannot do better. Take care of yourself, take care of all the people
around you, keep this spirituality, keep this vitality, it's a key point
for our survival...
